UNIVERSITY OF SARGODHA

ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT

UNIVERSITY OF SARGODHA

INTRODUCTION

Economics has a vital role to play in contemporary society and at University of Sargodha the emphasis is on relevance to human activity, experience and endeavour. Since the dawn of 2005, there have been a lot of structural and institutional changes in the traditional functioning of the Department. It is earning good name and scholastic fame among the community of economists both at the national and international level. This unmatchable popularity of the Department owes largely to its dedicated and dynamic leadership, academic spirit, and style of operating, at par with international standards. The Department had the opportunity of welcoming a large number of foreign faculty professors as we continue to implement strategic hiring that connects closely to the teaching and research needs of the department. At the same time, we have increasingly reached out to other units within the university and across the research organizations to harness more fully the wealth of research talent that resides with organizations. The Department is working with several national and international organizations like UNDP, HEC, UNICEF, USAID etc. The students of graduate and post-graduate are indulged in multidimensional research topics like development economics, poverty and inequality, gender discrimination etc. Under the project of Gender Equity Program (GEP), the department designed a subject “Gender and Development” which will be taught to M.Phil students. The Department of Economics, University of Sargodha is amongst six public sector Universities which is working for the sub-grant “Development of Linkages with E-Portal among Public Sector Universities” under phase II of GEP. The duration of this sub-grant is one year, from December 17, 2012-December 16, 2013. The primary objectives under the sub-grant are to improve the quality of teaching at the partnering Universities, raise the intellectual capabilities of the faculty; help to effectively utilize the potential of both faculty and students; sensitize non-faculty staff; uplift Gender Studies as a lead discipline for working on gender and women rights issues, contribute to the existing dialogue between various stakeholders, enhance the networks, foster cross fertilization of ideas and learning and add to the knowledge base around gender issues in Pakistan.
